PSL side back to its original name
DStv Premiership side Swallows FC has confirmed that they will be returning to their original name of Moroka Swallows FC. The club was unable to utilise the name due to a sanction handed down by FIFA.
This relates to outstanding payments that were owed to Brazilian midfielder Igor Alves. Alves played for the PSL club from 2008 to 2011.
The new club owners inherited the sanctions from the previous owner Leon Prins.
MOROKA SWALLOWS FC IS BACK
“Swallows Football Club will officially be referred to as Moroka Swallows FC from today,” the club announced in a short statement on social media. The club has also not divulged more information, except for the short statement.
BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DUBE BIRDS
Moroka Swallows were originally founded in the 1940s by Ishmael Lesolang, Strike Makgatha, and Johnny Kubheka. It was originally named Congregated Rovers after the firm in which most of the players and officials worked. The club was later changed to Moroka Rovers before it was changed to Moroka Swallows in 1947.
They were one of the powerhouses of South African football before their relegation for the first time in 2014/15. The next season, the club was again relegated to the SAFA ABC Motsepe League.
But in 2029, the club purchased the first division status from Maccabi FC and operated under the name Swallows FC.
THE DUBE BIRDS BUSY IN THE TRANSFER MARKET
Swallows have recently made a major boost to their technical team with the appointment of Steve Komphela as the head coach. Komphela will be assisted by Musa Nyatama as well as Ditheko Mototo.
The club has also shown its intentions of rebuilding and had already made a few signings. Fullback Keenan Phillips has joined from SuperSport United while midfielder Lantshene Phalane also joins from Royal AM. The club has also signed the Uthongathi duo of Falakhe Tshanini and Victor Bakah.
