Erick Mathoho nearing move to PSL side after leaving Kaizer Chiefs

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Erick Mathoho is reportedly nearing a move to a PSL side after leaving Amakhosi at the end of the 2022/23 season.

Mathoho, who is 33 years old, has been training with SuperSport United in recent weeks but has since left the club.

Indications are that SuperSport United never made an offer. On the other hand, Matsatsantsa announced the signing of Abdurazak Hamza, a 20-year-old Tanzanian defender.

The veteran defender, Erick Mathoho, has a wealth of experience, having played over 300 games in the PSL. He is also a former Bafana Bafana international, with 34 caps to his name.

Mathoho would be a valuable addition to any squad in the DStv Premiership. Newly promoted Polokwane City are reportedly in talks with Tower with the view of signing him.

“He left SuperSport United because they never made any offer. So he’s not with the team in Durban for pre-season. Polokwane City are talking to him with the view of signing him. They’re not looking at assessing him, they just want to sign him,” a source told FARPost.

If Rise and Shine are able to sign Mathoho, they would have added valuable experience to their defence for the upcoming season. They will be hoping that the signing can help them to maintain their PSL status.

Mathoho’s career at Kaizer Chiefs

Mathoho joined Kaizer Chiefs in 2012 from Bloemfontein Celtic. He quickly established himself as a key player for the club, making over 317 appearances in all competitions.

He won four trophies with Chiefs, including two PSL titles. At his peak, he was also a regular in the Bafana Bafana team.

Mathoho’s final season at Chiefs was not successful, as he made just one appearance in all competitions. He struggled with injuries and was subsequently released by the club at the end of the season.

Mathoho’s potential impact at Polokwane City

Mathoho would be a valuable addition to Polokwane City squad. He is a strong and experienced defender who would provide leadership and stability at the back.

City recently parted ways with veteran midfielder Mpho Makola and Joseph Mhlongo. They signed Oswin Appollis from Pretoria Callies and Luciano van Heerden as they look to bolster their squad.

City gained promotion after winning the Motsepe Foundation Championship title last season.
