Gavin Hunt on why SuperSport couldn’t sign Erick Mathoho

SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt has explained why his side couldn’t sign Erick Mathoho who was training with the club before they went to Durban for camp.

Matsatsantsa have been in Durban for a week now as they are preparing for the 2023/24 season busy schedule. The Tshwane outfit will participate in the CAF Confederation Cup after they qualified by virtue of finishing third on the DStv Premiership standings.

Mathoho, who left Kaizer Chiefs at the end of the previous season, was training with Hunt’s side in recent weeks. However, he didn’t travel with the team when they went to KZN.

Hunt has revealed that ‘Tower’ was the one who requested to train with the club. However, according to SuperSport’s gaffer, they realised they have enough players in the position that the 33-year-old plays.

He mentioned that they have already signed the Tanzanian defender Abdurazak Hamza, who joins the likes of Thulani Hlatshwayo and Luke Fleurs in the position.

Now, it’s clear the former Bloemfontein Celtic centre-back has to look for opportunities elsewhere. And as previously reported by FARPost, Polokwane City are said to be in talks with him.

“He came in, Erick asked me to train and I said okay but I know we’re pretty full in that position where he plays,” he told journalists during the media open day in their camp in Durban.

“We’ve got Tyson [Thulani Hlatshwayo], the youngster Tanzanian [Abdurazak Hamza]. So, we’re pretty full in that position.”

MATSATSANTSA BUSY IN THE MARKET

Meanwhile, SuperSport have been busy in the market, assembling a strong squad after losing some key players. They sold the talented left-winger Thapelo Maseko to Mamelodi Sundowns while the deal also included Grant Margeman who went the opposite direction.

They also parted ways with Patrick Maswanganyi, Jammie Webber, Thatayoane Ditlhokwe, Thamsanqa Gabuza, Keenan Phillips and Zukile Kewuti.

Apart from Hamza and Margeman, they have also signed Washington Arubi, Phathutshedzo Nange, Ronald Pfumbidzai, Godspower Ighodaro and Sphesihle Ndlovu on a permanent deal.
