DStv Prem teams learn their CAF competition opponents

DStv Premiership teams Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates, SuperSport United and Sekhukhune United have learnt their CAF opponents they will be facing in the 2023/24 season.

The preliminary round draw was conducted on Tuesday 25 July in Cairo, Egypt at the CAF Headquarters.

League champions Sundowns and runners-up Pirates will be participating in the CAF Champions League. On the other hand, third-place finishers SuperSport and Nedbank Cup finalists Sekhukhune will be in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Last season, the Tshwane giants exited the competition in the semi-finals on away goal rule following a draw 2-2 against Wydad AC in the second leg. The first had ended 0-0.

The Soweto giants are making a return to the champions league since 2019.

2017 confed cup runners-up SuperSport make a return on the continent after a six-year absence. Then Sekhukhune will be embarking in Africa for the first time.

Ahead of the new champions league season, 54 clubs from 42 member associations will be participating in the competition, whilst 52 clubs from 41 member associations will take part in the confederation cup.

CAF announced that the first preliminary round, first leg will be played on the weekend of 18, 19 and 20 August. Then the second leg will be take place on 25, 26 and 27 August.

The second preliminary round first leg will be played on the weekend of 15, 16 and 17 September. Then the second leg will kickoff from 29, 30 September and 1 October.

CAF COMPETITION PRELIMINARY ROUND FIXTURES CONFIRMED

Masandawana who are ranked in the top 10 clubs in Africa according to CAF will skip the first preliminary round. In the second preliminary round will face either Bendji of Gabon or Bumamuro of Burundi.

The Sea Robbers will take on Djabal of Comoros in the first preliminary round. The victorious side with then play against Jwaneng Galaxy of Botswana or Uganda’s Vipers SC in the second preliminary round.

Matsatsantsa were also exempted from the first preliminary round. They will face the winners between Gaborone United of Botswana and Elgeco Plus of Madagascar in the second round.

Babina Noko will lock horns against Young Baffaloes of Eswatini. The winner will face take on DR Congo’s FC Saint-Éloi Lupopo.
