Ex-Maritzburg and Swallows striker treks back to Zim’s PSL

After struggling to get goals and game time in the DStv Premiership, a former Moroka Swallows striker has trekked back to Zimbabwe’s PSL to revive his career.

Tawanda Macheke is on the verge of joining Manica Diamonds in Zimbabwe’s Castle Lager Premier Soccer League.

The 26-year-old striker spent the second half of the 2022/23 season at Moroka Swallows.

He, however, failed to fit well under Musa Nyatama, and his contract was not renewed when the season ended.

The former Moroka Swallows striker broke into the DStv Premiership in January 2022 when he joined Maritzburg United.

For Maritzburg United, he made 25 appearances in all competitions with no goal or assist to his name.

At Moroka Swallows, the gangly striker played eight matches in all competitions and again failed to find the back of the nets.

His exit from the DStv Premiership came as no surprise, as the former Moroka Swallows striker had underwhelming numbers.

Agent Gibson Mahachi told FARPost that the former Moroka Swallows striker had been targeted by several big-name clubs in Zimbabwe.

Dynamos and Caps United made enquiries on the players’ availability, but it is Manica Diamonds who are in pole position to land his signature.

“It’s not yet official, but negotiations with Manica Diamonds are at an advanced stage. We are just wrapping up a few things,” he said.

“We picked Manica Diamonds, an ambitious team where we believe our player can revive himself without much pressure.

“A number of the bigger clubs were also planning to sign him when they heard that he left Swallows.”

He will hope to revive his career that had faded after failing to leave a mark in the DStv Premiership.

However, he is not strange to Zimbabwe’s PSL, having played for Harare giants Dynamos and army-side Black Rhinos.
