‘Terrence Mashego 2.0’: Tinkler likens City’s new signing to Bafana star

Cape Town City head coach Eric Tinkler has likened the club’s new signing to Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns defender Terrence Mashego.

Mashego joined Sundowns at the start of the 2022/23 DStv Premiership season, ending his three seasons stay with CT City.

The pacey left-back had a difficult first season with Sundowns after sustaining an injury that kept him out for the better part of last campaign.

Meanwhile, CT City signed Tshegofatso Nyama from TS Galaxy ahead of the 2023/24 campaign. He has already been showered with praise by his new coach, who likened him to Mashego.

In the previous season, Nyama featured in 26 games in all competitions for Galaxy and contributed one assist.

“He [Tshegofatso Nyama] has been very good so far. I’m very happy with his signing,” said Eric Tinkler at the DStv Premiership launch in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

“He’s a good boy, very hard working and disciplined. He reminds me of Terrence Mashego in terms of his work ethic.

“With him, I see a lot of improvement in terms of understanding what are our expectations of him.”

The Citizens will be looking to improve and finish higher on the league table in the next season. They finished fourth on the Premiership log after accumulating 45 points.

Despite managing to retain key members of their squad, CT City lost one of their star players Mduduzi Mdantsane who joined Kaizer Chiefs most recently.

Mdantsane played in 29 matches in all competitions for the Cape Town-based side and scored two goals while making one assist.

Furthermore, CT City beefed up their striking force with the Angolan attacker Jo Paciencia on a permanent move.

The John Comitis-owned team will kick off their season with a clash against Polokwane City on the sixth of August.
