Polokwane City tie down Mpho Makola’s replacement

Newly promoted DStv Premiership outfit Polokwane City have managed to tie down a replacement for Mpho Makola.

The veteran midfielder parted ways with the club last month, as first reported by FARPost.

This was after the two parties could not agree on a package ahead of the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season. But Polokwane City have since tied down a potential replacement for the playmaker, signing Luciano Van Heerden on a two-year deal.

The former Baroka FC attacking midfielder is expected to provide the creative spark in the middle of the park for Rise and Shine. His signing comes after a successful trial with the 2022/23 Motsepe Foundation Championship winners.

The 28-year-old becomes the latest player to join the club after they brought in the duo of Oswin Appollis and Given Mashikinya from Pretoria Callies and Sekhukhune United, respectively.

Van Heerden is expected to be key for the Polokwane outfit, who are aiming at staying in the South African topflight for many seasons to come.

He is in line to feature when the club lock horns with Cape Town City FC in their league opener.

Last season, the former Highlands Park FC player made 24 appearances in all competitions. That’s 22 in the league and two in the Nedbank Cup. He managed to find the back of the net two times.

MORE CHANGES FOR POLOKWANE CITY FC

Besides bolstering the squad, City are also making changes in the technical staff.

Former Chippa United and Golden Arrows coach Lehlohonolo Seema has joined the technical team ahead of the new campaign.
