Banyana captain Refiloe Jane’s fitness update ahead of Italy clash

Banyana Banyana head coach Desiree Ellis has shed light on what is likely to happen regarding Refiloe Jane’s condition.

The Banyana captain sustained a soft tissue injury during their 2-2 against Argentina in a FIFA Women’s World Cup clash at Forsyth Barr Stadium Stadium last Friday.

Jane suffered the set after a collision in the 22nd minute of the showdown and couldn’t continue with the game.

She was then replaced by Kholosa Biyana in the 25th minute of the contest.

Two days ago, the team doctor Nthabiseng Maesela confirmed that Jane’s injury was not that serious, as the scan showed that the injury was minor.

Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s clash against the Italian side, Ellis provided the latest on the skipper’s condition and whether she would play or not.

DESIREE ELLIS’ ON REFILOE JANE’S INJURY

“As we said before, Refiloe has soft tissue injury,” said the three-time CAF Women’s Coach of the Year.

“For now, we will wait until the last minute before we make the final decision.”

Ellis went on to state that she would love to have Jane in her matchday squad, given her extensive experience of playing in Italy.

“And, of course, her knowledge is very valuable. She has been playing in Italy for a while now. One of her teammates is playing in the Italian team as well,” she added.

“So, her information has been very useful, and we used a lot of that. Also, our own analysis to profile the Italian team.

“Hopefully, our plan come together tomorrow.”

With the exception of Jane, everyone at the Banyana camp is healthy and ready to face Italy in their final group match on Wednesday.

The match between South Africa and Italy will take place at Wellington Regional Stadium, with the kick-off set for 9:00 [SA time].
