Kaizer Chiefs and Kgaogelo Sekgota part ways

Kaizer Chiefs have ended weeks of speculation and parted ways with winger Kgaogelo Sekgota.

The speedy attacker joined Amakhosi with huge expectations at the start of the 2021/22 PSL season. However, he struggled to make an impact at the club, blowing hot and cold.

Chiefs confirmed on Tuesday that their relationship with Sekgota has come to an end as they have elected to terminate his contract prematurely with a year remaining.

“Winger, Kgaogelo Sekgota has departed Kaizer Chiefs after spending two years with the club,” the Amakhosi statement reads.

“Sekgota arrived at Amakhosi from Swallows FC ahead of the 2021/22 season and featured 48 times (14 starts + 34 subs) in the gold & black colours of the Glamour Boys.”

The attacker only managed to provide two assists as he mixed some sublime moments with below-par performances.

There have been rumours in recent weeks that he might remain at Chiefs as he also formed part of the club’s pre-season. But after a meeting between the player and the club, Sekgota was shown the exit door.

The Soweto giants also expressed their gratitude to the player for his service to the club during his stay in Naturena. In addition, they revealed that the 26-year-old had already found a new home in the DStv Premiership. However, Chiefs did not state the name of the team.

According to reports, Sekgota is set to join Stellenbosch FC ahead of the new season. It is said that Sekgota had also attracted interest from Belgium, Moroka Swallows and SuperSport United. But Stellies won the race to acquire his services.

The former Vitória Setúbal FC star is a replacement for Junior Mendieta, who left Stellenbosch FC most recently to join Mamelodi Sundowns.

“His new club will make an announcement in due course after finalising all the paperwork pertaining to his registration,” added Chiefs. “We thank KG for all his efforts and wish him well for the rest of his footballing career.
