Home ground no longer an issue to Maritzburg United

There’s no uncertainty anymore with regard to where Maritzburg United will play their home games next season after the issue was resolved on Tuesday.

The Team of Choice recently lost their main sponsor Msunduzi Municipality to Royal AM. The local municipality decided to terminate their sponsorship agreement with Maritzburg after they suffered relegation from the DStv Premiership.

The Municipality stated they were concerned that Harry Gwala stadium would not get its full potential use since Maritzburg would be competing in the lower level.

Now, Royal AM, who are also based in Pietermaritzburg will use the 12 000 seat stadia as their kraal, moving from Chatsworth Stadium which is situated in Durban.

Meanwhile, there were questions as to where the Team of Choice will host their home games now. The rumours initially suggested that they would move to Woodburn Stadium on the other side of the town.

However, Maritzburg and Royal AM have agreed on sharing Harry Gwala next season. The decision was taken at the meeting held on Monday.

ROYAL AM AND MARITZBURG UNITED TO SHARE HARRY GWALA STADIUM

“We will be using Harry Gwala, and we’ll be sharing the stadium with Maritzburg United,” Royal AM General Manager Richard Makhoba told FARPost.

“When we play home, they will play away. When they play home, we’ll play away.

“We were sitting with the chairman this morning, Kadodia, and then we rolled out the plan together.”

This publication also got hold of Maritzburg United chairman Farouk Kadodia who also attested to the words of Makhoba.

Thwihli Thwahla will host their season opener against AmaZulu FC on Saturday, 5 August, at Harry Gwala at 17:30. Last season, Royal AM took four points from Usuthu in the league.

They won 2-0 in the first round at Chatsworth Stadium before they played out to a 1-1 draw in the second round at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
