Another former PSL star resurfaces in Rwanda
A South African-born former PSL midfielder has resurfaced in the Rwanda Premier League, looking to resurrect his career.
Not many local players make moves to other African countries. But in recent times, players such as ex-Orlando Pirates and Marumo Gallants’ Mahlatse Makudubela have moved to East Africa to join Young Africans.
Former Black Leopards goalkeeper Modou Jobe was the first player to move to Rwanda to join Musanze FC on a two-year deal most recently.
Another former Leopards midfielder Lethabo Mathaba has now also been unveiled on a two-year deal this past weekend. He has also joined Musanze FC.
The 23-year-old Mathaba spent two seasons at Lidoda Duvha and was part of the squad that got relegated to the ABC Motsepe League last campaign. He was signed from PSL side Pretoria Callies where he spent the 2020/21 season in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

“[Modou] Jobe was very instrumental in my move to Rwanda,” Mathaba told FARPost.
“He moved to Rwanda first, and when they were looking for a player in my position, he recommended me. So they arranged a trial and that’s where they saw me and signed me,” he explained.
ON THE STANDARD OF THE RWANDA PREMIER LEAGUE
“I have only just arrived, so I can’t compare the standard here and in South Africa. But what I have observed so far is that they work hard, and their level is decent. But I can’t just judge so far.
“For me, football is the same everywhere as long as I do the right things and work hard. I have been looking for this kind of opportunity for a while. It’s not just about playing for Kaizer Chiefs or Orlando Pirates.”
Mathaba says it is his desire to explore other leagues in the continent and retire outside if an opportunity arises.
“I always wanted to explore other leagues. Even if I finish my career this side, I won’t mind. I need a new challenge and that Includes other leagues in Africa if an opportunity comes.”
