Ntseki defends Chiefs goalie Petersen despite costly howler against Sundowns
Kaizer Chiefs head coach Molefi Ntseki has defended his goalkeeper Brandon Petersen after his blunder handed Mamelodi Sundowns a win in a DStv Premiership clash on Wednesday afternoon.
Amakhosi suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Bafana Ba Style at Lucas Moripe Stadium.
Goals from Sundowns’ new signings Lucas Ribeiro and Neo Maema were good enough to earn the Brazilians maximum points. Ashley Du Preez scored the only goal for the Soweto giants.
Chiefs cheaply gave away those two goals due to errors, with Petersen and Venezuelan midfielder Edson Castillo seen as the culprits by Amakhosi fans.
NTSEKI BACKS PETERSEN AFTER COSTLY MISTAKE
Ntseki has since come forward to back his shot-stopper following his dreadful display that cost Kaizer Chiefs.
“I think things like this do happen in football,” said Ntseki in a post-match interview. “If we were to count how many times he came out to save the team, will nullify the mistakes he made that led to the goals.
“Anything that happens in a game of football is a team effort.”
The Glamour Boys’ mentor continued: “If we were to look back and try to trace where the first mistake was made is not only about him but the whole team made a mistake and that’s how we conceded.”
Just two games into the new DStv Premiership campaign, one can already tell that there are already mounting issues at Chiefs that need immediate intervention.
As things stand, Amakhosi are in 12th position with one point from two outings.
KAIZER CHIEFS’ NEXT ASSIGNMENT
The side will now shift their focus to the MTN8 quarter-final fixture against Cape Town City. The game will take place on Sunday, 13 August 2023.
The showdown will kick-off at 15:00 at Athlone Stadium.
