Themba Zwane and Mamelodi Sundowns slapped with PSL charges

Mamelodi Sundowns talisman and captain Themba Zwane and the club have been slapped with charges by the Premier Soccer League.

Sundowns were adjudged to have delayed the kickoff of their MTN8 quarter-final encounter against Moroka Swallows last Saturday. The Brazilians went on to beat Swallows 1-0 to book a spot in the semi-finals.

Zwane was yellow-carded at the start of the match for time-wasting. The league has announced further sanctions for misconduct on the player and the club.

PSL Prosecutor Zola Majavu revealed on Thursday that Zwane alongside his club have been charged for delaying the kickoff of the match for approximately three minutes.

ADVOCATE ZOLA MAJAVU UPDATE ON ZWANE AND SUNDOWNS

“Welcome to the commencement of the new season, I hope this one will be less hectic from a disciplinary point of view,” Majavu said on PSL media.

“The judicial body of the league is in a state of readiness to deal with cases as and when they arise to make sure that come end of the season we don’t have unnecessary backlogs that could potentially and adversely affect the smooth finalisation of the league.

“Having said that, I can also confirm that I preferred charges against Mr Zwane alongside his club Mamelodi Sundowns, arising from their MTN8 encounter. Where the match was delayed for approximately three minutes.

“As a result of that misconduct, which is certainly legislated against in the rules of the league. They have been summoned to appear before the PSL DC on the 24th of August at 11:00.

“Once that matter is finalised, I will come back and give the final update on the outcome. In the intervening period and as per usual, there will be no running commentary on this matter until such time that I come with the update formally.”

In addition, Sundowns had a perfect start to their 2023/24 DStv Premiership season. They won three of their opening league games.

The Tshwane giants beat Sekhukhune United, Kaizer Chiefs, Golden Arrows and they are in the semi-finals of the MTN8.

Masandawana will face Chiefs in the two-legged semi-finals on dates and times yet to be confirmed by the league.
