Morgan Mammila justifies Mpengesi’s firing of coaches

Chippa United head coach Morgan Mammila has justified the firing of coaches by the club’s chairman, Siviwe Mpengesi.

The Chilli Boys made five coaching changes in the 2022/23 DStv Premiership season, with Mpengesi citing a poor run of form by the club.

Chippa had Daine Klate, Siyabulela Gwambi, Kurt Lentjies, Lehlohonolo Seema and Mammila going out of the club’s revolving door last season.

Meanwhile, Mammila, who was recalled in the off-season to take over the hot seat says if he was Mpengesi, he would also fire coaches if the team struggles for positive results.

“Let’s be honest, how many teams have fired coaches last season, you guys must leave my friend [Mpengesi] alone,” said Mammila said.

“Even top teams fired coaches, leave my friend alone. He’s not trigger happy, if the results are not coming and I was Mpengesi I must do something,”

Chippa had an underwhelming showing last campaign after finishing 14th on the league table. They finished just above Maritzburg United and Marumo Gallants who were relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

In the current season, the Gqeberha-based side went unbeaten in their first three opening matches of the league.

They played draws against Kaizer Chiefs, TS Galaxy and Orlando Pirates before losing to Sundowns.

Despite being winless this season, Mammila is optimistic that his charges will start scoring goals to win matches.

“We creating chances, it’s just a matter of time before we score a lot of goals in a match. Of course, I’m disappointed with the results [against Sundowns] but happy with the performance of my players.

“The points that we collected against top teams like Chiefs, Pirates and TS Galaxy are going to be very important for us.”

Chippa United will be looking to register their first win of the season in their next match. They tackle Cape Town Spurs on Friday, 25th of August at Athlone Stadium.
