‘I’ll leave promotion talk to others’: Clinton Larsen

Magesi FC coach Clinton Larsen has explained why he’s not getting carried away with the “promotion talk” ahead of the start of the Motsepe Foundation Championship campaign.

Magesi will play their first game of the season against arch-rivals Baroka FC at the Global Stadium.

The Limpopo derby clash will take place on Sunday, 27 August 2023, with the kick-off set for 15:00.

Last week, the club unveiled 12 new players ahead of the new term. Amongst the new recruits were ex-Orlando Pirates defender Diamond Thopola, Junior Seseane, Thierry Sama, Wonderboy Makhubu, Mcedi Vandala, Anathi Ngwadla, Glen Malesa, Mzwandile Buthelezi, Tshepo Matsemela, to mention a few.

However, coach Larsen has come forward to say that he will not dwell much on the “promotion talk”, but rather leave everything to happen by itself.

But the well-travelled mentor believes that the squad they have assembled for the new season is capable of getting the job.

“I believe we are a lot stronger than the last season. But, I will leave the promotion talk to everybody else,” said Larsen.

“I have never done that in my career, and I’m not going to start now. But what I can guarantee is that we are a lot stronger as a unit than we were last season.

“We will also play a better brand of football than we did last season, and that’s guaranteed.”

WHAT LARSEN ANTICIPATES AHEAD OF THE NEW SEASON

Coach Larsen went on to reveal that he anticipates a better campaign ahead than the previous one.

“We anticipate a better season than the last one. It was a frustrating season. We really didn’t have the quality that I felt was needed at this level to compete,” he added.

“The fact that we have headhunted some players this season, and I think we got 90% of the players we have headhunted from the opposing teams.”

Meanwhile, the Magesi mentor further acknowledged that it won’t be a walk in the park, despite anticipating a better season for themselves.

“At the moment, I’m happy with the preparations. I’m looking forward to what is going to be a tough season ahead.”
