Gavin Hunt clarifies Lyle Lakay’s role
SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt has revealed the role he wants newly signed player Lyle Lakay to play on the team.
Lakay has previously played as a left-winger during his early days at Matsatsantsa as well as at now-defunct Bloemfontein Celtic and Cape Town City FC.
He was converted into a left-back role by then-Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane when he joined the club in 2018. A position that he has also played at Bafana Bafana.
WHAT ROLE GAVIN HUNT WANTS LYLE LAKAY TO PLAY
Hunt has also revealed where he thinks the 32-year-old is best suited to play for his team.
“That’s his only position [left-wing], yeah,” he said after the 2-1 win over Stellenbosch on Saturday.
“Do you know how he started? He is a left-sided player. So that’s where he plays, in my opinion. That’s my opinion, football is all about opinions. He has obviously played different positions.
“In the second half did you see what we did with him? He was playing inside, centre midfield. So that’s where I think he will end up playing anyway. You need to move players around, but he is definitely a better player in the attacking third. He could have had a few goals tonight,” explained Hunt.
SUPERSPORT UNITED OVERPOWERS STELLENBOSCH
Hunt also reacted to the victory over ‘Stellies’ at Athlone Stadium on Saturday night. The win took United to second position with 10 points, five behind log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who have played one game more.
“With these conditions, I thought it was going to be a battle, and it was a battle. I thought we played well at times. We tried to play, but it was difficult on this surface, but I thought we adapted,” he said.
Matsatsantsa will now shift focus to the clash against Golden Arrows taking place at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday.
