Molefi Ntseki: ‘Sundowns have been very lucky in the last six years’
Kaizer Chiefs head coach Molefi Ntseki has claimed that Mamelodi Sundowns have been lucky to win trophies in the last six years.
Sundowns clinched their record sixth DStv Premiership title in a row last season under the guidance of head coach Rulani Mokwena.
The Brazilians are on course to win their seventh successive league title after winning all their opening six games in the new season.
They defeated Sekhukhune United, Kaizer Chiefs, Golden Arrows, Chippa United, Richards Bay and Polokwane City. Sundowns is currently sitting comfortably at the summit of the Premiership table with 18 points.
Despite proving to be a formidable side over the years, Ntseki has labelled Sundowns as “lucky” to win trophies. This comes after Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena’s statement that Chiefs are historically a lucky club.
MOLEFI NTSEKI CLAIMS THAT SUNDOWNS HAVE BEEN LUCKY TO WIN TROPHIES
“If you look at Manchester City, there were games where they were very lucky to have won the game,” Ntseki said.
“The most important thing is going into the game with confidence and belief. When you have belief and faith, obviously, luck will be on your side.
“I think they have benefitted a lot when it comes to Sundowns. If you look at the six years of winning the league, there were moments where they’re very lucky.
“So it’s very normal, I think the time when Chiefs was winning, it was very normal to say that things at times turn out for you. And I think if we can have that luck back, we’ll be winning the league this year and winning all the trophies.”
RULANI MOKWENA CLARIFIES “Chiefs ARE a very lucky team” remark
Meanwhile, Mokwena has since clarified his comments about Chiefs being a lucky team. He said that he was misinterpreted and that he meant no disrespect to the club.
“Imagine someone says to you that you are chosen by God. And in most cases, you are the one that God chooses when he has to choose between you and others, and people try to misconstrue, misuse,” said Mokwena.
“As a kid who grew up in Orlando – having experienced so many games of Pirates versus Chiefs first-hand… I would understand the feeling and the touch when Chiefs won.
“I would hear what the people would say… when Pirates played Chiefs, when Swallows played Chiefs, and [in] how many games you just saw God’s divine hand following Chiefs. It is very true, God must be a Kaizer Chiefs supporter. And there is no greater compliment that could be given.”
Chiefs will welcome Sundowns at FNB Stadium on Saturday, 02 September, in the highly-anticipated MTN8 first-leg semi-finals. (Kickoff at 15:00).
