Erick Mathoho ‘relaxing’ after PSL side opts against signing him
Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Erick Mathoho is keeping his future plans under wraps after a PSL club decided not to sign him.
Mathoho has been without a club since he left Chiefs at the end of last season. He spent 11 successful years with the Soweto giants and became a club legend.
And with the new season in full swing, it remains to be seen which club the 33-year-old will be playing for.
The Amakhosi legend trained with SuperSport United before the start of the 2023/24 season. But the Tshwane side decided against signing him as the club’s head coach, Gavin Hunt stated that they have enough players at centre-back.
“He came in, Erick asked me to train, and I said okay, but I know we’re pretty full in that position where he plays,” Hunt said.
In an interview with FARPost, Mathoho said that he will announce his new club in due time.
This comes after DStv Premiership returnees Polokwane City opted against signing in following a training stint.
According to insiders, the club said that the ex-Bafana Bafana international ‘did not fit into their style of play’.
ERICK MATHOHO: I’M JUST RELAXING
“I am just relaxing and attending to some personal staff. I think now I cannot tell where I will be playing this season,” said Mathoho to FARPost.
“But when the time is right, people will know about my next move. I think now people can wait.”
Mathoho joined Chiefs in 2012 from now-defunct Bloemfontein Celtic, where he spent three seasons.
During his spell at Chiefs, Mathoho lifted two Premierships titles (2013 and 2015), Nedbank Cup (2013) and MTN8 (2014).
He is also boosting with 37 caps for Bafana Bafana. The Tshiombo-born star has also made over 300 appearances in SA’s topflight with 30 goals and one assist to his name.
