Bafana players take the blame for poor home support

Senior Bafana Bafana players Ronwen Williams and Percy Tau have made an honest admission on what leads to poor support at home matches. In recent times, Bafana Bafana have struggled to attract fans at their matches, especially in Gauteng.

The senior men’s national team attracts poor attendance as compared to other major sporting codes such as Cricket and Rugby. SAFA were left embarrassed when only 168 tickets were officially sold for the 4-0 win against Sierra Leone in September last year at FNB.

The Hugo Broos coached-side are scheduled to take on Namibia on Saturday and DR Congo on Tuesday, with both matches at Orlando Stadium. SAFA had intended to take the matches away from Gauteng but couldn’t succeed in negotiations with other provinces.

RONWEN WILLIAMS TAKES RESPONSIBILITY FOR POOR HOME SUPPORT

Speaking at the 10bet and Bafana Bafana media breakfast held in Roodepoort on Thursday, captain Ronwen Williams was the first one to admit that the poor results and marketing also led to fans losing interest.

“It’s not nice, the players don’t enjoy that. But we will take the blame, it’s on us,” Williams told the media.

Bafana Bafana players visited the Thaba Jabula SS school in Soweto on Thursday.

“Like I said, we need to do more to be out there. Like I said before, we used to go to the malls engaging with the fans, and now they don’t know us. We will take the responsibility and with Percy and other Captains maybe discuss it with the technical team to say we need to do more of this,” he said.

PERCY TAU CONFIDENT BAFANA BAFANA WILL TURN THE CORNER

Tau also shared the same sentiments but is optimistic that things will change as soon as they start winning matches.

“I also believe that if we start winning more games the fans will come. When the results are good, everyone wants to be a part of it and enjoy the moment,” he said.

“We believe that the South Africans will come and we will be able to create a good atmosphere. They also want to be part of it. So we need to make them happy, but we will get the results, I am hoping.”

The match on Saturday will start at 15:00 while the encounter with DR Congo will start at 17:00.
