Ex-Bafana striker weighs in on who should be Hugo Broos’ main striker

Ex-Bafana Bafana striker Katlego Mashego has weighed in on who should be Hugo Broos’ main striker in the national team.

In the past days, there has been a big debate on who the Belgian mentor should use in front as a goal poacher.

Bafana will host Namibia and DR Congo in friendly matches on 9 and 12 September respectively at Orlando Stadium.

The duo of Zakhele Lepasa and Lyle Foster have been in great form at club level in front of goal with Orlando Pirates and Burnley FC respectively.

Lepasa has found the back of the net 10 times in all competitions from eight appearances. On the other hand, Foster has scored two goals from three league matches.

According to Mashego, he doesn’t think it’s a headache for Broos to select his striker. The coach may be selecting his starting 11 based on the opponents.

“I don’t know who should play [as number one striker] and I don’t know the coach’s thinking and how he’s preparing for the games,” Mashego told FARPost.

“I don’t think it should be a problem who he selects. Whoever he selects will be based on the analysis of the opposition. And obviously the players how they adapt to his system in that particular game.

“Whoever that will play in front, it’s good because he has two players who are confident coming back from their [respective] clubs scoring”

On a positive side, Mashego believes it’s a good thing that the national team has got two in-form strikers, it shows that the level of talent is improving.

“It’s good that South Africa has got two strikers that are in form. One locally and one in the Premier League, it shows we improving as a team,” he added.

To add, there is also Lebo Mothiba who makes a return to the national team since November 2019 due to long-term injury and lack of fitness. Mothiba has scored once for RC Strasbourg Alsace in three matches in Ligue 1.
