Grant Margeman opens up about his ambitions to play overseas

SuperSport United midfielder Grant Margeman has opened up about his ambitions to play overseas and fulfil his childhood dream.

The Cape Town-born star joined Matsatsantsa A Pitori on a permanent deal from cross-town rivals Mamelodi Sundowns at the start of the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season.

Margeman had an impressive start to the new campaign for SuperSport, which earned him a Bafana Bafana call-up for the upcoming friendlies.

The former Ajax Cape Town skipper made his first Bafana appearance under Hugo Broos in a goalless draw against Namibia last Saturday and produced a Man-of-the-Match performance.

Margeman featured in all six opening matches for SuperSport in all competitions and scored one goal from a deep-lying midfield position.

Although Margeman recently joined SuperSport on a long-term deal, he has insisted that his focus is with the Tshwane-based side, but in future, he would like to play in European top leagues.

GRANT MARGEMAN ON HIS CHILDHOOD DREAM TO PLAY OVERSEAS

“At the moment, I’ll say I’m happy at SuperSport, but my goal is always to go play overseas. It has been my goal since I signed my first professional contract at the age of 18,” Margeman said.

“So if the opportunity comes, I’ll grab it with both hands and make sure that I make the best out of the opportunity.

“For me is just to keep doing well for my club because you never know what might happen in the next couple of months.

“I just need to keep doing well, and if the opportunity comes, I’ll take it with both hands,” he added.

Margeman further revealed that he’s not thinking too much about being part of the 2024 AFCON that will take place in January 2024 at Ivory Coast.

“Obviously, with the AFCON coming, a lot of players will want to be in the final squad. So, for me, just being here now is an achievement.

“So for me, there are more steps to come and make sure I focus on the now and not dwell too much on that [AFCON]. I just need to make sure I do well in the next coming games.”

Bafana Bafana will face DR Congo on Tuesday, 12 August, at Orlando Stadium. Kickoff is at 17:00.
