Le Roux on Kaizer Chiefs: ‘There was no direct contact’
South African midfielder Luke Le Roux admits he was flattered by Kaizer Chiefs’ rumoured interest in him but reveals there was no direct contact from the club.
The 23-year-old recently moved from Swedish club Varbergs BoIS to FC Volendam in the Netherlands.
He has been capped five times by Bafana Bafana and is considered to be one of the most promising young midfielders in South Africa.
Le Roux moved after three and a half seasons in Sweden, having made 99 appearances for the Swedish club he also previously captained.
He penned a three-year deal with the Eredivisie side and says he always wanted to stay overseas to continue his development.
But before the switch, the former SuperSport United and Stellenbosch FC midfielder was linked with Kaizer Chiefs. He has since revealed there was no contact with him from the club.
‘I WANT TO BE IN EUROPE’
“There was never direct contact with me, might have been with the agency, but they [agency] know that I want to be in Europe for now,” Le Roux said.
“I heard of the rumours and everything, but there was no direct contact with me or my agent.”
The Bafana Bafana star says he is focused on developing his career in Europe. He believes any interest would have been down to him working hard.
“[It] comes back to working hard for something. [You] always have to keep pushing and doing your best because you never know who is watching,” Le Roux said. “But it feels good to know that there are big teams like Chiefs, for example, tracking you.”
DStv Premiership giants Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly in the market for a defensive midfielder. Le Roux would have been a good fit for the club. He is a talented player with a lot of potential.
The former Ajax Cape Town Academy player is still waiting for his work permit to be finalised so that he can make his debut in the Eredivisie.
However, he will need to recover from a recent injury that forced him to withdraw from the Bafana Bafana national team squad.
