What Katlego Mashego thinks of the current Bafana Bafana squad
Former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates striker Katlego Mashego has voiced his opinion on the current national team under coach Hugo Broos.
Bafana have been on an incessant rise in recent months. They have registered five victories, drew three games and suffered two losses in their last 10 matches.
South Africa further impressed a lot by booking a ticket for next year’s AFCON finals that will be hosted in Ivory Coast.
To add, there have been several players performing well for both the national team and their clubs. These include the likes of Lyle Foster, Percy Tau, Zakhele Lepasa and Themba Zwane.
In their just-ended camp, Hugo Broos’ charges played out to a 0-0 stalemate against neighbouring country Namibia and beat DR Congo 1-0.
KATLEGO MASHEGO’S VERDICT ON THE CURRENT BAFANA BAFANA SQUAD
The retired Mamelodi Sundowns goal poacher believes it’s still early to say Bafana Bafana are on the right track. However, he notes some positives viewing it as a good foundation for the future.
“I think it’s a bit too early to be saying that [we are on the right track]. We’ve been failing to be consistent and didn’t qualify for the past AFCON tournaments,” Mashego told FARPost.
“We can’t go there with the mentality of winning the tournament. I believe there is a lot that we need to fix and improve on.
“But I think it’s good for the national team that we have players that are doing well and are playing regularly for their respective teams.
“That is something we can build on, it sets a good foundation for the national team going forward whether they are going to win or not. For me, it is good preparation and a step forward.”
