Chippa Mpengesi takes blame for Mammila’s failed stint last season
Chippa United chairman Siviwe “Chippa” Mpengesi has admitted there was a mistake they made when they appointed Morgan Mammila as a head coach last season.
Mammila became Chippa’s head coach following the dismissal of Daine Klate in the early stages of the previous season. The former football administrator was also exed in February this year after a short run of poor results.
He then joined Moroka Swallows as a Technical Advisor in March, assisting Musa Nyatama who was an interim coach then. And before the start of the season, Mammila returned to Chippa, taking over as a head coach again after Lehloholo Seema left.
Mpengesi admitted that last season, they made a mistake by appointing Mammila and not backing him with someone experienced on the bench.
CHIPPA MPENGESI SAYS THEY MADE MISTAKE BY NOT GIVING MAMMILA ENOUGH SUPPORT
“You know Morgan is our project, we had an idea of him being a coach, so it was for us to support him,” Mpengesi told the media.
“Last time we made the mistake of appointing him as a coach but not giving him the necessary support.”
The club recently appointed Vusumuzi Vilakazi as a Technical Director. And Mpengesi believes Vilakazi together with Mammila will stir the side in the right direction.

“I mean Kanu Vilakazi, his name says for itself, when he was surprisingly available, we could not waste time because he is a person we have been admiring,” he added.
“But then the mandate was clear that you are here to build the team, build the development and then assist the senior team. Chippa United’s brand is not only about the senior team.
“So, now he’s doing very well. We saw our MDC winning last week and here we are today. And I think deservingly we won today and I don’t think we won by fluke.
“So, these two guys, our hope is that they work well together because in football any coach always has his good technical team that is strong.”
