Rulani Mokwena reacts to Sundowns breaking PSL record

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has reacted to his side setting a new PSL record following a victory over Stellenbosch FC.

Masandawana beat Stellies 3-1 at the wet Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday evening to stretch their lead on the DStv Premiership table.

Sundowns came from behind after Stellenbosch opened the scoring within the first 15 minutes, thanks to a goal by Devin Titus. Meanwhile, Grant Kekana, Aubrey Modiba, and the young Siyabonga Mabena rattled the back of the net for the champions.

The Brazilians are now ten points ahead of second-placed Golden Arrows, who have played one match less.

Mokwena’s Sundowns came to the game having equaled Kaizer Chiefs’ record of 31 consecutive league games unbeaten in the top flight.

With their victory over Steve Barker’s side, Sundowns set a new PSL record of 32 straight league games without a loss.

Moreover, they levelled Chiefs’ PSL record of eight successive wins from the start of a new season. Amakhosi achieved that feat in the 2014/15 season during Stuart Baxter’s first stint with the club.

RULANI MOKWENA REACTS TO MAMELODI SUNDOWNS NEW PSL RECORD

“I am super proud, super, super proud,” Mokwena said in response to the question from the media about setting a new record.

“Unfortunately I am not the type of person who likes to celebrate too much. Because there’s a very important game for us on the weekend.

“But I’m super, super proud because the record you are talking about has been standing for almost 20 years. If we went for another two years, it would be 20 years that the record has not been broken.

“And it was a super team that had that record, a very, very good side. It’s unbelievable, I speak a lot about this group of not getting enough credit, not getting enough praise.”

“Tomorrow all newspapers, all these newspapers must have the record-breaking story,” Mokwena continued.

“And not back page, it’s not a back page story. It’s a front-page story and this group deserves it because of what they are doing.”

Mokwena and his charges will have to swiftly shift their focus to the CAF Champions League.

The Tshwane giants welcome the Burundian side, Bumamuru FC for the second preliminary round 2nd match at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.
