Duncan Lechesa’s absence in Richards Bay clash explained amid exit rumours

Polokwane City coach Lehlohonolo Seema has explained why his colleague Duncan Lechesa was not in the dugout in their match against Richards Bay FC with reports suggesting that he has left the club.

On Wednesday night, the Rise and Shine collected their third DStv Premiership win this season, defeating the Natal Rich Boyz 1-0 at the King Zwelithini Stadium.

The absence of Lechesa on the bench on the day fueled the iDiski Times report that he was heading out.

According to the report, Lechesa was also linked with the Baroka FC job, however, Bakgaga ba ga Mphahlele eventually appointed Dan Malesela as the head coach.

When asked about Lechesa’s absence, Seema said the former Royal Eagles mentor was unwell and went to see a doctor for a check-up. He insisted he is still part of the club’s technical team.

“Coach Duncan has gone to see a doctor, he’s gone for a check-up but he’s still there with us,” Seema said.

“He just went to see the doctor, he didn’t make it to this trip.”

When asked further about Lechesa’s rumoured departure, Seema said he was unaware of such.

“Where did you see that? I don’t know. [Did he resign] today? He resigned?” he asked.

“I don’t know guys.”

Lechesa and Phuti Mohafe, as co-coaches, led City to the top-flight promotion, finishing on top of the Motsepe Foundation Championship table last season. However, at the beginning of the current campaign, the club roped in Seema, who seems to be calling the tune on the Polokwane City’s bench.

Following their victory on the road in KZN, Polokwane are now fifth on the log standings having gathered 13 points from eight matches.

The Limpopo outfit’s next task will be after the FIFA break when they take on Sekhukhune United on 8 October in a league clash.
