Hugo Broos slams Cassius Mailula’s agent for MLS move
Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has slammed Cassius Mailula’s agent Karabo Mathang-Tshabuse, following his move to Toronto FC.
Mailula completed his move to the MLS side from Mamelodi Sundowns in the off-season after impressing in his maiden campaign in the DStv Premiership.
The highly-rated attacker joined his South African compatriots Njabulo Blom and Bongokuhle Hlongwane who ply their trades in the MLS.
Blom is playing for St. Louis City while Hlongwane is in the books of Minnesota United. In the 2022/23 season, Mailula scored 15 goals and made four assists in 33 matches played in all competitions for Masandawana.
The Limpopo-born star earned his first Bafana Bafana call-up in March 2023 and made his debut against Liberia in the AFCON Qualifiers.
Mailula is yet to make a cut for Bafana squad since his well-documented move to Toronto a few months ago.
HUGO BROOS BLAMES THE AGENT FOR MAILULA’S BAFANA EXCLUSION
With the youngster left out of the Bafana squad to play friendlies against Eswatini and Cote d’Ivoire, Broos blamed Mailula’s agent for the switch.
“You know, I’ll put it like this, you have a good agent when the agent is looking at you, not an agent who is only looking for his wallet,” Broos said.
“I’m afraid Mailula doesn’t have a good agent when you let him go to Toronto when know there are two Italian internationals, [Lorenzo] Insigne is there.
“There’s a Canadian international [Dandre Kerr] and you let a youngster like this who has 15 game experience in the PSL. That is not the right choice because Mailula doesn’t play and he will not play even in the next months.
“Competition is finished in America from last season. We can’t blame him for that, I think we have to blame the agent.
“You know that as an agent if he goes there it will be difficult. He should have stayed with Sundowns and played in the CAF Champions League again to get experience. It was much too soon and not the right club.”
Bafana Bafana will will face Eswatini on Friday 13 October before clashing with the 2024 AFCON host nation Ivory Coast on Tuesday 17 October.
