How Percy Tau has fared against his former paymasters, Sundowns

Al Ahly talisman Percy Tau will have to dig deep if he is to achieve anything memorable against his former club, Mamelodi Sundowns.

Sundowns and Al Ahly are set to lock horns in the first leg of the African Football League [AFL] semi-finals on Sunday. The encounter will be played at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium [15:00].

The return leg has been penciled in for the 1st of November in Cairo, Egypt. This will be the fifth time, Bafana Bafana star, Percy Tau meets his former paymasters in Al Alhly colors.

And while he has been exceptional for the Egyptian club, he has not had a memorable time against Sundowns. The AFL clash will be the fifth time he faces Masandawana since he left the Tshwane giants in 2018.

In four meetings, they lost three times while settling for a draw once. The Lion of Judah as Percy Tau is known featured in all four matches where he scored once.

First, he was on parade as they lost 1-0 at home in a CAF Champions League group phase match in February 2022.

The Egyptian giants lost by an identical scoreline in the reverse fixture played in March 2022 in Cairo.

They went on to share spoils after a thrilling 2-2 on 25 February 2023 in Egypt. And their last meeting ended in favour of the serial DStv Champions.

The Tshwane giants beat Al Ahly 5-2 on 11 March in CAF Champions League group phase match. In this one, the 29-year-old was on target as he scored Al Ahly’s second goal after Mohamed Sherif got their first one.

For Sundowns, Marcelo Allende, Themba Zwane and Teboho Mokoena got a goal each, while Peter Shalulile struck twice.

As a result, Al Ahly will approach the match with caution, although optimistic of getting a win.

For Percy Tau, the season has been promising as he already sits on four goals for the Egyptian giants.

He scored two braces in two Egyptian league matches for the serial CAF Champions League winners.
