What Riveiro thinks went wrong in Pirates’ shock defeat to CT Spurs

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has shared his thoughts on his club’s struggles to translate their cup form to league games following their shock defeat to Cape Town Spurs on Wednesday.

The Buccaneers went down 2-1 to the Urban Warriors who registered their first win of the current DStv Premiership campaign at the DHL Stadium.

Pirates have now gone four matches without a league win, collecting two out of a possible 12 points.

JOSE RIVEIRO SHARES HIS PERSPECTIVE ON THE SPURS DEFEAT

“Today [last night] we experienced something different than in the recent games against us, the ones who are chasing a one-goal lead. We are not used to conceding [that early],” said Riveiro.

‘It’s true that in the last game, we conceded a couple of transitions in the game against Polokwane City. But today the feeling in the first minute was different. What we do in the Cup games is exactly the same, we don’t change the way we play or our intentions.

“Today trust me, I was not going to be happy even if we had gotten a good result because it’s a problem to start the game the way we did. But we created more than enough to at least get a point in the worst-case scenario in my opinion,” he said.

ORLANDO PIRATES NOT UTILISING SCORING OPPORTUNITIES

“Like I said so many times, football is a scoring game, it’s not a scoring game. You get nothing with the possession, with the attempts or entries to the box if you don’t put the ball in the net.

“In recent times we have been struggling to do the last thing. That’s why we are not collecting points,” he added.

Pirates remain at position 13 on the log with just nine points from eight matches. They are six points above the relegation spot and 15 points behind leader Mamelodi Sundowns.
