Yanga coach’s verdict on Skudu Makudubela ahead of Kariakoo Derby

Yanga SC coach Miguel Angel Gamondi has given his verdict on Mahlatse ‘Skudu’ Makudubela’s start to life in Tanzania ahead of the Kariakoo Derby on Sunday.

Simba SC hosts defending Tanzania Premier League champions Young Africans at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.

It will be Makudubela’s first derby between the two giants of East African football. He missed the first derby – the Community Shield – owing to injury.

Ahead of the tie, Gamondi, a league title winner with Mamelodi Sundowns in 2007, has shared his thoughts about the South African.

The former Marumo Gallants winger was sidelined by injury, only returning to the pitch last month. Gamondi has gradually introduced him from the bench in the previous three games.

WHAT MIGUEL GAMONDI SAID ABOUT SKUDU MAKUDUBELA

“I’m happy with him, he’s working very hard,” Gamondi told FARPost. “He was unlucky to be injured in the first game. After that, it’s been difficult for him to come back and win a starting place in the team. But I think he’s doing very well.”

The Argentinian believes the former Orlando Pirates winger will play a significant role in the team.

“But like every player in the team, he has a role. He has a strong point and a weak point. Skudu will be helpful for us in some moments of the game. I’m very happy with him.”

The 33-year-old instantly became a fan favourite after joining the Jangwani giants during the off-season because of his skill set.

“I know the fans love him because he makes show off, but we also need efficiency. He’s a good export from South African football.”

Meanwhile, the former Wydad Casablanca coach, Gamondi, is bullish ahead of the much-awaited derby.

“We need to win because three points is very important because if we win, we can be in the same position if the other team wins their game in hand. But like every game, three points are very important. We need to win the three points.

I know the derby is historic for the fans, but we need three points.”

Yanga and Simba SC are both on 18 points, having played seven and six games, respectively. The winner of the derby will move to the top, toppling Azam FC who have played nine games so far and collected 19 points.
