Six talking points as Chiefs beat Spurs to boost morale ahead of Soweto Derby

Kaizer Chiefs returned to winning ways on Wednesday as they beat Cape Town Spurs 3-2 at an empty FNB Stadium in the DStv Premiership to boost their morale ahead of the Soweto Derby.

Edson Castillo, Ranga Chivaviro, and Christian Saile were on target for Chiefs, while, Luvuyo Phewa and Luke Baartman netted for the Urban Warriors.

As a result of the win, The Glamour Boys jumped to seventh place on the log standings with 14 points from 11 matches.

For CT Spurs, it’s back to the drawing board as they remain rooted at the bottom of the log. The Capetonians have only collected three points from 10 outings.

Below are the six talking points between Chiefs and Spurs five-goal thriller.

CHIEFS PLAYING AT AN EMPTY STADIUM

It was an unusual encounter without fans, who are always supporting their respective teams in the stands. This was due to Chiefs’ one-match ban for their supporters’ violence.

The last time PSL teams played behind closed doors was back in 2020 during the global pandemic, Covid-19.

AMAKHOSI DEVELOPMENT COACHES USED AS BALL RETRIEVERS

Chiefs’ development coaches and support staff were on duty on the night as ball retrievers. It is worth noting that Arthur Zwane, who was demoted back to the youth ranks was nowhere to be seen.

This comes after several players from the youth structures allegedly refused to be ball boys in the Carling Knockout Cup clash against AmaZulu FC.

The club, therefore, reportedly terminated the contracts of players such as Puso Dithejane and Unathi Mdaka. Dithejane has since joined TS Galaxy.

RANGA CHIVAVIRO OPENS HIS KAIZER CHIEFS GOAL-SCORING ACCOUNT

Chivaviro netted his first Chiefs goal just before the half-hour mark to make it 2-0.

He had previously made eight appearances without finding the back of the net for his new club. His lack of goals was due to injury setbacks.

The striker joined Chiefs at the start of the season from Marumo Gallants with high expectations as he scored goals for fun at the Limpopo side last campaign. The goal will boost his confidence.

CHIEFS CONFIDENT AHEAD OF THE SOWETO DERBY

The victory came at the right time for Amakhosi ahead of the much anticipated Soweto Derby as they managed to get the maximum points. It was their first win in three games.

Chiefs will host rivals Orlando Pirates on Saturday 11 November at FNB Stadium in a DStv Premiership match.

CALVIN JOHNSON’S FIRST WIN AS CHIEFS COACH

This was Johnson’s first win as Kaizer Chiefs coach after he took over the reigns from Molefi Ntseki. It was his second match in charge after a 2-1 loss against Golden Arrows last time out.

The victory therefore ended the team’s three consecutive defeats in all competitions.

ITUMELENG KHUNE CAN’T KEEP A CLEAN SHEET

The former Bafana Bafana international has let in five goals in four matches he has played in this season.

The 36-year-old conceded two goals against Spurs. However, the backline isn’t helping as it has been shaky.

OTHER DSTV PREMIERSHIP RESULTS

Polokwane City FC and SuperSport United shared spoils as they settled for a 1-1 draw at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium. Thabang Matuludi scored for City, whereas Etiosa Ighodaro netted for SuperSport.

Moroka Swallows edged TS Galaxy 1-0 at Dobsonville Stadium. Keenan Phillips scored the only goal of the match.
