Middendorp emerges as leading candidate for CT Spurs job

Ernst Middendorp has emerged as the frontrunner to land the Cape Town Spurs coaching job, according to multiple sources.

The 64-year-old German coach has been without a club since leaving Tanzania side Singida Fountain Gate two months ago.

Spurs recently parted ways with Shaun Bartlett and have been searching for a replacement. Middendorp and Dylan Kerr have reportedly been two leading targets.

Former Sekhukhune United coach Brandon Truter was offered to the club recently. He confirmed to FARPost that “there was no response from Spurs” when his agent made contact.

Middendorp is now in pole position to take over at the Spurs with immediate effect. Indications are that interim coach, Sean Connor, who is the club’s technical director, will return to his original position once the German takes over.

Connor has worked with Vasili Manousakis in recent games, guiding them to their first victory of the season.

WHY MIDDENDORP LEADS THE RACE FOR SPURS JOB

Middendorp will have his work cut out at the Mother City club, who returned to topflight football this season after gaining promotion.

Spurs are currently in 16th position in the PSL standings, and they will be hoping that Middendorp can help them improve their form in the second half of the season. They have only won one game after 11 outings. Their win came against Orlando Pirates.

Middendorp looks set to be announced as the new Spurs coach in the coming days. Interestingly, the club has invited the media for a press conference on Friday.

It remains to be seen whether they will use it to announce their new coach. Meanwhile, Spurs’ next fixture is against Royal AM at the DHL Stadium on the 25th of November.
