Kaizer Chiefs make crucial goalie decisions on Khune, Bvuma & Petersen

Kaizer Chiefs have made some crucial decisions regarding their goalkeeping trio of Itumeleng Khune, Bruce Bvuma, and Brandon Petersen.

The trio have their contracts with Chiefs expiring at the end of the 2023/24 PSL season.

The decisions regarding Khune, Bvuma, and Petersen are important ones for Chiefs as they look to build a team that can challenge for trophies.

ITUMELENG KHUNE

Khune is a club legend and a leader on the field, and his contract comes to an end when the curtain comes down on the 2023/24 term.

The club’s captain and longest serving player was offered a one-year contract which expires in June 2024. The 36-year-old has been a key player for the Amakhosi for over a decade, but his recent performances have been inconsistent.

The former Bafana Bafana goalie has featured in five games this season, conceding six times.

Kaizer Chiefs are unlikely to extend his contract, with indications they could facilitate his transition onto another role at the club. But that will also depend on what he decides to do.

BRUCE BVUMA

Bvuma, previously touted as Khune’s understudy, has been offered a new contract. The 28-year-old has yet to fully convince Chiefs’ management that he is ready to be the team’s number one goalkeeper.

Nonetheless, they have kept faith in him and a new deal is on the cards. Bvuma is likely to sign in the coming weeks, with an announcement to follow.

He has served as backup goalkeeper to both Khune and Petersen so far this season with no appearances to his name. But Bvuma has made the matchday squad several times, sitting on the bench.

BRANDON PETERSEN

Petersen, who joined the Chiefs from Bidvest Wits in 2021, also looks set to pen a new deal. The 29-year-old has played more games than Khune and Bvuma in the last two seasons. He remains in the club’s plans.

In the 2023/24 season, he has been Amakhosi’s preferred number-one goalkeeper with 11 appearances in all competitions. Petersen has kept four clean sheets while conceding 10 goals.

However, he has missed the club’s last three games due to committing silly mistakes at the back.

NEW GOALKEEPER

FARPost has it on good authority that Chiefs are looking to sign a new goalkeeper to add depth to their squad.

Chiefs are reportedly considering a foreign goalkeeper, but that will depend on the availability of a spot for a foreigner.

The Soweto giants already have five foreigners on their books and would have to release one to register another.
