Lucas Ribeiro explains what convinced him to join Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns striker Lucas Ribeiro Costa has opened up on what convinced him to make a switch to the Brazilians.

The DStv Premiership champions completed the acquisition of the 25-year-old forward at the beginning of the season from SK Beveren. Ribeiro was quick to acclimatise to Sundowns’ style of play and SA football.

The Brazilian scored on his debut when Masandawana beat Sekhukhune 2-1 in the league match in August.

He has rattled the back of the net on ten occasions in 12 matches he has played in all competitions. In October, he suffered an injury setback and missed six games.

He made a return when Sundowns beat Wydad Casablanca in the African Football League final to claim the title.

Ribeiro was frank that he didn’t know much about the Tshwane giants. However, he admitted he was impressed by the club’s “tactics and style of play” when he did research.

He says he discovered Sundowns were all about winning trophies and a chat with the club’s head coach Rulani Mokwena also convinced him to switch to SA.

LUCAS RIBEIRO SAYS HE MADE THE BEST DECISION BY JOIN SUNDOWNS

“When I was approached by Sundowns at first, to be honest, I didn’t know much about the club but it caught my attention and I had to go and search about them and the country,” said Ribeiro.

“I realised it’s a good club with ambitions to win which is actually part of what I was longing for and for my career to be in that space.

“And on my search, we had a chat with the coach, a Zoom call and we were talking about the tactics and the style of play when I searched I noticed how the team was playing and the coach explained the ambitions of the club, how they play and everything.

“It was a big win for me because I bought into the idea. And when I arrived here, it was actually the same thing I was told before I arrived.

“So, it was what I was longing for and also I arrived in a good group. So, everything was good.

“To be honest with you, I am at the best moment of my life and the decision I took to join Sundowns is the best moment because I’ve tasted winning with the club.

“It gives me more desire to wanna win more titles with the club. So, I’m truly grateful for the decision I took.”
