Lehlohonolo Seema off to a false start at Sekhukhune United

Newly appointed Sekhukhune United head coach Lehlohonolo Seema began his tenure with a loss after suffering a 2-0 defeat against RS Berkane in the CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday night.

Seema took over the coaching reigns at Sekhukhune from Brandon Truter who was sacked due to a poor start to the season.

The Lesotho-born coach resigned from his position at PSL newcomers Polokwane City few weeks ago before taking over at Sekhukhune.

Sekhukhune United travelled to Morocco to face RS Berkane in the first match of the CAF Confederation Cup group stages.

The Limpopo-based side made it to the group stages of the Confederation Cup for the first time since they gained promotion to the DStv Premiership during the 2021/22 campaign.

Sekhukhune qualified for the Confederation Cup after making it to the 2023 Nedbank Cup final where they lost 2-1 to Orlando Pirates in May.

In the preliminary rounds, Sekhukhune beat Saint Eloi Lupopo 4-2 on aggregate in September to go through to the group stages.

RS BERKANE OPEN THE SCORING AGAINST SEKHUKHUNE UNITED

The match began on a high tempo with both sides searching for an early goal and it was RS Berkane who opened the scoring through Adil Tahif in the 14th minute.

Babina Noko went in search of a quick equaliser but they fell short due to misplaced passes in the final third.

Despite, Sekhukhune’s efforts find an equalising goal, RS Berkane went into the half-time break with a 1-0 lead.

The Simon Malatji-owned team kept pushing for their first goal of the night but the Moroccan side stood firm in defence. Berkane scored their second goal in the 86th minute through El Fahli.

RS Berkane claimed a 2-0 victory against over Sekhukhune to walk away with maximum points.

In their next Confederation Cup match, Sekhukhune will take on Congolese side Diables Noirs at Peter Mokaba Stadium on the 3rd of December.
