Tinkler on whether he’s worried about potentially losing Mayo

Cape Town City head coach Eric Tinkler has spoken on whether he has fear of losing the club’s talisman Khanyisa Mayo to potential suitors.

The 25-year-old has become a man to rely on for the Citizens upfront having been with the team for just two years. He made a switch to City in 2021, joining from Richards Bay who were in the second-tier at the time.

In this campaign, Mayo has scored seven goals and registered two assists from 15 matches he’s played in all competitions. On Sunday, he scored the solitary goal to inspire City to a 1-0 victory over Golden Arrows in a DStv Premiership match.

The SuperSport United product has been linked with a move away from City in the past transfer windows with Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs said to be interested in him.

In May, he extended his contract with the Western Cape side, signing a “long-term” as per the club’s statement.

Further, the City slapped a hefty price tag on the striker. However, this doesn’t rule the potential moves out with the player continuing to display his prowess.

Tinkler says he isn’t worried about having to potentially deal with life without Mayo in the near future. He also feels the attacker has a lot to improve in order to reach his full potential.

ERIC TINKLER SAYS KHANYISA MAYO HAS A LOT TO DO TO IMPROVE

“You can’t worry about that and Mayo needs to be worried about what he’s doing now,” said Tinkler.

“Opportunities in life come off the back of scoring goals, winning competitions, winning cups and winning leagues. It’s not one performance that’s going to get you a move, it’s gonna be many performances.

“Mayo still has a lot of work he needs to do in his game to really reach the level I think is of the highest standard. I think there’s still…like tonight he missed a couple of chances he should put away.

“And for top strikers’ expectations, they do that.”
