Vladislav Heric in limbo as Maritzburg United’s coaching search continues

The search for a new coach continues for Maritzburg United after the club decided against hiring veteran Serbian coach Vladislav Herić, writes Joshua Hendricks.

The Team of Choice cut ties with Zipho Dlangalala earlier this week and are looking for a replacement. The decision came after the former DStv Premiership side were stunned 3-1 by Pretoria Callies on Saturday at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium.

United are also winless in their last two games after playing a goalless draw against NB La Masia on 10 November. The Motsepe Foundation Championship side lies seventh on the log after 13 matches. They won five games, drew four and lost on four occasions.

Herić, with a wealth of experience in South African football, previously led Maritzburg in the 2007/08 season and guided Chippa United’s promotion in 2013/14.

Known for coaching various clubs, including Black Leopards and Cape Town Spurs, Herić’s most recent role was with Cape Town Spurs in October 2020. The veteran coach confirms the collapse in negotiations with the Pietermaritzburg outfit.

“I’ve been called, I’ve been interviewed by Maritzburg United,” he told FARPost. Myself and the Maritzburg authorities could not agree on some technical things. I am currently on my way home to Cape Town.

“That deal will not be happening, so in short, I will not be the coach of Maritzburg.” Maritzburg United are gearing up for Upington City in their next match on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Herić has revealed that his efforts to secure land for an academy in the Eastern Cape have hit a snag.

“I’ve been trying to establish a football academy in Gqeberha. I’ve been trying to get a piece of land to establish the academy.

“It’s been tough because I could not get the land so the academy can prosper. Everybody knows what has to be done, but they don’t do it. Also been called to do coaching courses, on my own account, sharing my view and experiences with young coaches.”
