Morgan Mammila makes Steve Barker plea to SAFA
Outspoken Chippa United coach Morgan Mammila has made a plea to SAFA about his fellow colleague Steve Barker.
Mammila’s call to the SA Football Association comes after Barker guided Stellenbosch FC to the final of the Carling Knockout Cup.
This will be Stellenbosch’s first cup final in the domestic cup competition. They will meet another ambitious side TS Galaxy in the final on Saturday, 16 December at the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium.
In the previous seasons, the Cape Windlands side has been unlucky when it comes to the cup competitions.
Last season, they were eliminated by Sekhukhune United in the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup on penalties after losing 4-3 on penalties after the match had ended 0-0.
Earlier this season, the Stellies also suffered a heartbreak in the MTN8 semi-final after they were knocked out by Orlando Pirates on away goal rule. The aggregate scoreline was 2-2 over two legs.
MORGAN MAMMILA SAYS SAFA MUST GIVE STEVE BARKER UNDER-23 NATIONAL TEAM JOB
Mammila made a plea to SAFA to give Steve Barker an opportunity to coach the SA Under-23 national team.
Barker has experience working with youngsters and has produced the likes of Bongani Zungu, Olwethu Makhanya and Ashley Du Preez.
“Coach Steve Barker have proven that he works well with young players. Give him the U23 national team head coach job now SAFA. You deserve it, brother,” said Mammila on his official Twitter account, now known as X.
STELLENBOSCH’S ROAD TO THE CARLING KNOCKOUT FINAL
All of Stellenbosch’s matches in the Carling Kockout have been on the road. The Cape Town-based side first defeated Mammila’s Chippa United 2-1 in the Round of 16 in October.
In the quarter-finals, they cruised past league returnees Polokwane City FC, winning 2-0 last month.
Stellies then displayed a great performance on Saturday afternoon as they beat Richards Bay FC 3-0.
