AmaZulu FC president Zungu gives update on club’s pursuit of women’s team

AmaZulu FC president Sandile Zungu has given the latest update on where the club is with their hunt for a women’s team.

When the Usuthu presented their plan for Vision 2032 in July, the club’s CEO Sinenjabulo Zungu revealed that they were in the process of establishing a women’s team. She stated it “remained part of the priority” despite some difficulties that led to delays.

Currently, Mamelodi Sundowns and TS Galaxy are the only two DStv Premiership clubs with functional women’s teams in their set-up. The two sides take part in the Hollywoodbets Super League.

Meanwhile, as of the current season, the clubs that are participating in the CAF interclub competitions had to meet the CAF Club Licensing requirement of having a women’s team as part of their structure.

Zungu admits he wants his side to qualify for CAF competitions, however, meeting the CAF requirement isn’t the only reason why the club decided to form a ladies’ team. He says Usuthu want to help elevate the women’s game having seen how swiftly it has been growing in recent years.

Zungu confirmed that Usuthu have approached a few women’s teams in KZN, intending to form partnerships with them.

AMAZULU FC ON THE HUNT FOR WOMEN’S TEAM

“There are teams that we have spoken with in the last few months that we intend to form relationships with,” said Zungu as translated from isiZulu.

“Maybe we can buy them and they could be a base of the women’s team under AmaZulu. Maybe we can affiliate with them. It’s really our intention to have a women’s team.

“We won’t do that just because we have pressure from CAF. Yes, qualifying for CAF interclub competitions requires you to have a relationship or affiliation with a women’s team but it’s good to have a women’s team.

“If you look at how fast-growing is women’s football, it shows that there is a future. So, women also need to be developed and supported in sporting codes that they love.

“They show that soccer is one of the sporting codes they are talented in. And as Usuthu olumabhesh’ ankone, we want to associate with them.”
