Super Eagles coach Peseiro spotted at Chippa United

Nigeria’s national team, the Super Eagles, head coach José Peseiro, was spotted at Chippa United’s training session on Friday.

José Peseiro is currently in Port Elizabeth and attended the DStv Premiership side’s session at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

The Portuguese coach has been in the news in the West African country over his outstanding allowances. He guided the three-time African champions; Nigeria to qualification for the forthcoming AFCON in Ivory Coast.

But a poor start to their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, which saw him pick two 1-1 draws against Lesotho and Zimbabwe, has put him under pressure. In 15 games in charge of the Eagles, Peseiro has won six and lost six.

WHAT IS JOSE PESEIRO DOING AT CHIPPA UNITED?

According to a club source, Peseiro was allowed to address the players after their morning training session.

“He took some time just to motivate the team. Before his visit, he communicated with the team and was invited to our training session. When addressing the players, he said he had been watching Chippa for a while and was impressed by how the team plays,” a club source said.

The Portuguese coach is thought to be in Port Elizabeth to meet a Nigerian international who plays for the club. The Chilli Boys are home to former home-based Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabili. The 27-year-old goalie linked up with the DStv Premiership side at the start of last season. He moved after parting ways with Nigeria’s professional football league outfit, Katsina United.

“Primarily, the purpose of his visit is to see Stanley Nwabili, who has previously played for the national team player of Nigeria. After the training session, he took time to talk to Nwabili,” added the source.

Peseiro to watch chippa play in the DSTv Premership

The former Real Madrid assistant coach is set to watch Chippa play on Saturday. Chippa United will be back in action on Saturday when they take on Golden Arrows.

The match will be a tough test for Morgan Mammila’s side, but they hope to bounce back from their recent slump. In their last game, 10-man Chippa lost 2-1 to Sekhukhune United.

Nwabili has featured 12 times for the Eastern Cape outfit this season. He has kept six clean sheets, conceding 10 goals and will be hoping to get a start against Arrows.

In the recent qualifiers against Zimbabwe and Lesotho, the Chippa shot-stopper was not called to camp. Peseiro opted for the experience of Francis Uzoho, Olorunleke Ojo, and Maduka Okoye.

In recent weeks, Chippa United have been struggling for form, and sit in position 13. They have won three games, drawn six times, and lost four.
