Keletso Makgalwa opens up on unpleasant Sundowns exit

Upington City attacker Keletso Makgalwa has opened up about the unpleasant exit from Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Limpopo-born star parted ways with Sundowns at the start of the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season. He later joined the Motsepe Foundation Championship newbies Upington City on a short-term contract.

Makgalwa has been dishing out great performances in the Motsepe Foundation as he has scored five goals and contributed three assists in 10 games for City.

Meanwhile, this publication reported that the 26-year-old utility player has caught the attention of teams in the SA’s top flight. However, the midfielder has insisted that his focus is helping the Nothern Cape-based outfit gain promotion to the Premiership.

“At the moment, I’m just focused on helping Upington City gain promotion to the DStv Premiership. We have a good team and I believe we can achieve the promotion,” Makgalwa told FARPost.

Before leaving the Brazilians, Makgalwa endured a frustrating spell on the sidelines. And he was sent out on loan several times.

‘Street Bash’ as he’s famously known, went on loan at clubs like Maritzburg United, Moroka Swallows, TS Galaxy, and All Stars.

“The situation at Sundowns was very difficult but sometimes you have to be strong despite whatever that’s coming at you,” Makgalwa added.

“So, I had conversations with coach Manqoba [Mngqithi] because I was playing a lot of the friendlies with them. The club technical director [Flemming Berg] told me I wasn’t on coach Rulani Mokwena’s plans.

“And I didn’t want to go out on loan, so that’s where the problem was. They said if you won’t go out on loan, you have to train with M Tigers which is Sundowns team that plays in the ABC Motsepe League.

“I didn’t have a problem with that because the transfer window was still open. I decided to talk to them so that we go our separate ways.”
