Mass exodus looming at Maritzburg United?

Maritzburg United will likely have a mass exodus in the January PSL transfer window with some big names linked with exit doors.

The hopes of returning to the DStv Premiership are gradually getting slim for the KZN outfit. They have endured an inconsistent start to their first season in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

They have only picked five wins from 17 matches, drawing five and losing seven. This has left them in 11th position on the log standings after collecting 20 points from the possible 51.

The Team of Choice suffered relegation to the second tier at the end of the previous season. They failed to keep their top-flight status in the PSL Promotion Playoffs. Cape Town Spurs took their spot after winning the three-team mini-league.

The club’s objective this season was to secure the promotion back to the top tier. With slim chances of accomplishing that, the club has proposed pay cuts to the highest-paid players. Management wants to cut costs.

However, some aren’t willing to agree on salary reductions and could be on their way out.

MARITZBURG UNITED ASK PLAYERS TO TAKE PAY CUTS

According to FARPost sources, among players who have been approached by the club are Tshepo Gumede, Zukile Kewuti, Siboniso Conco, Brian Hlongwa and Bayzel Goldstone.

This website also understands that the club told Judas Moseamedi that it can’t afford his salary and should look for opportunities elsewhere. Should he leave, his departure would be a shock to many with him having reunited with the club just a month ago.

The source added that Maritzburg United bosses had meetings with the aforementioned players this week and the futures of the majority hang in balance.

Maritzburg will return to action after the AFCON when they take on Casric Stars away on 13 February.
