Makgalwa’s rise: How Nkosi rekindled the flame after Sundowns ashes
Upington City FC coach Thulani Nkosi has opened up on how he rekindled Keletso Makgalwa’s flame after Mamelodi Sundowns’ ashes.
Released by Sundowns in September 2023 as he was deemed surplus to requirements, Makgalwa discovered fresh pastures at Upington City.
The former Sundowns midfielder has hit the ground running and made a stunning start to his life in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
The 26-year-old, who won a total of five major trophies with Sundowns, spent several seasons away from the club at TS Galaxy, the now-defunct All Stars, Moroka Swallows and Maritzburg United.
In Sundowns colours, Makgalwa played 37 appearances, scoring seven goals and providing two assists.
HOW KELETSO MAKGALWA HAS BEEN PLAYING IN THE SECOND-TIER LEAGUE
This season at Upington City, the pacey winger has netted an impressive five goals in the ten matches he has played so far.
A debut goal against Magesi FC was followed by a goal in a 2-0 victory over Maritzburg United before he scored against JDR at home.
The three goals were followed by an away strike in the 2-0 win over Venda FC at the Malamulele Stadium. He further added one goal to his tally in City’s last game of the year 2023 against Magesi at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.
Makgalwa’s contributions to the Northern Cape-based club have seen him attract interest in the DStv Premiership. As reported by FARPost, he is wanted by Sekhukhune United.
WHY MAKGALWA KEEPS SHINING DESPITE SUNDOWNS FALL
The ex-Sundown star wrapped up 2023 with spectacular performances at City. His great work has left an overjoyed Nkosi revealing what makes Makgalwa shine in the second-tier league.
“He’s doing very well for us since he arrived. I think he shines like this because he fits [in] very well, and his teammates compliment him very much,” Nkosi told FARPost.
“And, he is humble and understands that he’s at Upington now. It helps him a lot. I think letting the fact that he’s at Upington City sink into his head helps him to settle very well.
“When you are up there [playing for Mamelodi Sundowns], and it happens you go down, it’s how you take it that matters because if you keep thinking about the downgrade, it’s going to affect you. So, I always say it’s up to the person.
“The good thing with Keletso is that he has accepted and made peace that he has got a new team. I think that’s what helps him to keep shining, and I am happy with the progress.”
