Itumeleng Khune on being coached by Jose Riveiro
Carling All-Stars captain Itumeleng Khune has opened up on being mentored by Jose Riveiro during the Carling Black Label Cup clash on Saturday.
All-Stars defeated Stellenbosch FC 2-1 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday to lift the Black Label Cup thanks to Mfundo Vilakazi and Ashley Du Preez’s first-half strikes.
Riveiro’s side did the unexpected, getting the better of one of the most high-flying sides in the league, Stellies who won the Carling Knockout Cup last month to earn the spot in the Black Label Cup outing.
Khune was the skipper of the youthful team and produced a spectacular performance to help his side grab the trophy. He was named the Man of the Match and walked away with R100 000.
Asked about his take on Riveiro after the match, the Chiefs goalie commended the Spanish tactician for the prowess he has in coaching. He praised him for having been able to assemble and prepare the team of players from different clubs accordingly in the space of two days.
ITUMELENG KHUNE PRAISES JOSE RIVEIRO FOR WINNING MENTALITY
“I think the results and the performance today gives you answers of how he is as a coach,” said Khune.
“And since he’s been in the country, he’s been here for two seasons. He has won three cups already for his club.
“It gives the sense that he’s a great coach. The fact that his club went all the way to Spain to get him, they believe in him. Same as the fans here at home, they voted for him amongst 16 other coaches.
“So, it shows quality as a coach, it shows how much he’s dedicated to the game. His winning mentality… I mean he assembled the team for two days, he managed to prepare us and people wrote us off.
“I mean you would have given Stellenbosch a win just before the game started. But the fact that we got two early goals, it shows that we responded very well as players.
“And the coach and the rest of the coaching staff deserve credit.”
