Former protege backs Pitso Mosimane’s AFCON dream

With Pitso Mosimane having admitted he harbours a dream of winning AFCON with a national team, his former protege has weighed in.

Last year, Mosimane did not hide the fact that he’s open to heading back to coaching a national team, as long as it offers him a vision and a plan.

At some point, he was heavily linked with the Nigerian national team coaching gig.

The former Al Ahly, SuperSport United, and Mamelodi Sundowns mentor is currently without a club since cutting ties with UAE club Al Wahda in November 2023.

Mosimane worked as a caretaker coach of Bafana in 2007, before the appointment of Carlos Alberto Parreira, who he then served under as assistant coach.

In July 2010, Mosimane was appointed as the new head coach of Bafana on a four-year deal. After his sacking in 2012, he went on to become one of the most decorated coaches in club football.

KATLEGO MPHELA ON HOW BAFANA BAFANA WOULD BENEFIT FROM PITSO MOSIMANE

Mosimane, received a thumbs-up from one of his ‘favourite sons’ Katlego Mphela to return to the national team.

Mphela spoke about the benefits that Bafana Bafana would get from Mosimane’s experience should they re-appoint him to take charge.

However, he also stated that it would be unfair on Hugo Broos to be let go just like that after the good job he has done with the team. Bafana only lost once in the last 18 months under the tutelage of the Belgian mentor.

“For Bafana, I think this could be the right time for him [Pitso Mosimane] to return. I mean, he has got the experience already,” Mphela told FARPost

“He has been in the position before and knows the expectations, and also knows the South African players.

“But I think if you listen to his interviews or what he’s trying to say is that he will only consider the national team when they are ready to compete. He wouldn’t want to go to the AFCON just to add numbers. He wants to win it.”

The retired footballer continued: “When you look at the level that we are now, I don’t think we are in a position to win it. But you never know, it’s football it might happen.

“For him, I think we have quality players. But it will be a matter of how to put confidence in them that we can do it. Maybe they need someone like him.

“But it would be unfair to coach Hugo Broos for what he has done for the team so far. We just need to support him and see what happens.”

According to reports, Mosimane is now linked with Saudi club Abha FC. It has been reported that ‘Jingles’ has agreed terms with Abha FC.
