Why Zim’s coaching genius is yet to break into the DStv Prem

Highly-rated Zimbabwean coach Kalisto Pasuwa has revealed why he is yet to make a big break into the DStv Premiership.

He was at some point mentioned as a perfect candidate for the Kaizer Chiefs job, which is held by Cavin Johnson on an interim basis.

The Zimbabwean coach Kalisto Pasuwa is currently in charge of Nyasa Big Bullets of Malawi. In the East African country, he has been so good that he helped the club win every silverware that was there to fight for in 2023.

They won the Charity Shield, Kamuzu Cup, TNM Super League, FDH Bank Cup, Castel Challenge Cup and the Airtel Top 8. In turn they achieved a feat that was last managed in 1973.

Pasuwa has now won five straight league titles in the Southern Africa nation, taking his impressive career haul to nine league titles. Back home, in Zimbabwe, he previously won four consecutive league titles with Dynamos from 2011 to 2015.

Unfortunately, a move to the DStv Premiership has remained elusive despite his impressive track record. The 53-year-old has also been linked with Richards Bay FC.

The ex-midfielder, however, remains committed to the Malawian giants, saying he still has a year on his contract to fulfil.

“I still have one year left on my contract. I signed a contract, and I have to fulfil it. I’m here to work for this team,” said Pasuwa.

In addition, Pasuwa revealed the reason why he has not made a big break into South Africa. “It’s usually speculation. I haven’t received any offers, so there is no way I can just end up there,” he said.

“So because my bread needs to be buttered, I work where I get a better offer. That is why I am in Malawi. If something better comes up, I will definitely consider it because everyone wants to rise, and it’s a good league. Therefore, I’m committed to the task that I have at hand so that I remain competitive.

“I just want to thank the team [Nyasa Big Bullets] for how they pushed themselves to achieve what they have achieved this year. Hopefully, we will do better in terms of correcting mistakes next season.”
