Ex-Pirates forward Justin Shonga part ways with Georgian club
Ex-Orlando Pirates forward Justin Shonga has parted ways with Georgian side FC Gagra six months after joining the club.
Shonga joined FC Gagra in July 2023 from Nkwazi, competing in the MTN Super League in his home country, Zambia. Before joining Gagra, the 26-year-old attacker attracted interest in the DStv Premiership at the start of the 2023/24 season.
The striker was reportedly on the wishlist of Chippa United at the start of the campaign but the deal did not materialise.
Shonga was introduced to South African football by Orlando Pirates in 2017 and went on to make over 70 appearances for the Buccaneers, scoring 16 goals and providing 16 assists.
The Zambian international parted ways with Pirates at the end of the 2019/20 season. He joined Tshakuma Tsha Madzivhandila, who had just bought the status of Bidvest Wits. Amongst other clubs that Shonga played for are Cape Town City, Sekhukhune United, and Egyptian side Ismaily SC.
In his six months in Georgia, the former Pirates goal-poacher featured in 16 games for Gagra and scored two goals.
JUSTIN SHONGA IS A FREE AGENT AFTER PARTING WAYS WITH FC GAGRA IN GEORGIA
FARPost understands that Shonga has left Gagra after signing a short-term contract with the two-time Georgian Cup winners.
“Justin Shonga is now a free agent. He left FC Gagra after their league ended in December 2023,” said a source close to the player. I mean, I don’t think the club and the country elevated Justin Shonga the way he anticipated. So that’s how leaving the club came about.
“You can expect him to find a team very soon because he’s a quality player who can add value in terms of goal contribution.”
