Namibia veteran counting on Peter Shalulile’s ‘silent strength’

While Peter Shalulile’s goalscoring exploits for the Brave Warriors have earned him plaudits and headlines, veteran defender Ananias Junior Gebhardt has shed light on another crucial aspect of the talismanic striker’s contribution – his silent strength.

Gebhardt described Shalulile’s influence within the national team camp, highlighting a quiet leadership style that goes beyond the captain’s armband.

Namibia’s hopes to earn their first AFCON win rest on the Mamelodi Sundowns’ forward. They make their fourth appearance at the continental showpiece.

Interestingly, in their most recent appearance – in 2019 – they lost all their games, only managing to score one goal. But, with Shalulile in fine scoring form for club and country, Gebhardt has highlighted the importance of the 30-year-old’s quiet leadership that he exudes through his dedication and work ethic.

“We’re glad to have a generational player like Peter Shalulile; the stats speak for themselves,” said Gebhardt. “He’s been tearing it up for the past few seasons. So when he’s around you, sometimes he doesn’t even have to say much.

“But just the hard work he puts in, the motivation that you draw from that speaks volumes. He’s influential, and he’s our captain. We’re blessed to have a player like Peter Shalulile.”

The Sundowns marksman was on target in every qualifier game, leading to the 2023 tournament. He will be hoping to continue his impressive scoring streak for the national team.

After the Tunisia tie, Namibia face neighbours South Africa on 21 January, 2024. As he faces several of his Sundowns teammates in that tie, Shalulile’s goalscoring prowess and leadership could be key to success.

Gebhardt’s glimpse into the Namibia camp reveals the immense respect and admiration Shalulile commands from his teammates. His leadership and work ethic inspire the entire squad, making him a crucial asset as they strive for success on the continental stage.
