Maphathe joins new club after Richards Bay legal dispute

Following a legal dispute with his former club, Richards Bay FC, Katlego Maphathe has signed with a new team in the DStv Premiership.

November 2023 saw Maphathe’s departure from Richards Bay FC after the club hastily chose to terminate his contract.

The 30-year-old defender had a contract that would still run until 2025 after signing a three-year contract extension last campaign. The right defender, who was the club’s captain, had only made five appearances in the current season for Bay before his contract was abruptly cut.

After being released, he took the KZN-based club to the PSL Dispute Resolution Chamber [DRC]. This came after the two parties couldn’t agree on the settlement figures as the contract of the player got terminated.

The termination of the player’s contract has led to a legal disagreement between him and the club. His legal representatives are seeking financial compensation, but the specifics of the claim are undisclosed. But Richards Bay have reportedly declined the compensation request, stating they believe the player’s contract termination was justified.

However, FARPost understands the PSL DRC ruled in favour of the player last week, as it has ordered the club to pay him the settlement fee for unfair dismissal.

KATLEGO MAPHATHE NEW HOME REVEALED

Meanwhile, Maphathe has agreed to join Cape Town Spurs on a free transfer. The Free State-born defender has penned a short-term contract with CT Spurs on Wednesday.

Maphathe has been training with the team in the past few days while he was still waiting for the PSL DRC outcomes.

After a few days of trials under coach Ernst Middendorp, Maphathe has impressed enough to convince the club to sign him. He resumed training with his new teammates on Thursday as they prepare for their league match against Royal AM on 14 February.

CT Spurs are at the bottom of the DStv Premiership table. They have only won one, drawn one and lost 14 games in 16 matches this season so far.
