Broos identifies Bafana’s ‘most important’ positive at AFCON

Hugo Broos has identified the “most important” positive for Bafana Bafana at CAF AFCON as they failed to reach the final after losing to Nigeria in the semi-final.

South Africa put up a fight against the might Super Eagles as they drew 1-1 in the 120 minutes but they succumbed in the penalty kicks losing 4-2 in the end. The defeat ended their dream to hoist the second AFCON trophy as they lifted their first on home soil in 1996.

Bronze medal is what Broos’ men can now aim for in this edition and will face DR Congo in the 3rd place match on Saturday, 10 February.

Despite the loss to Nigeria, Broos sounded proud after the match, saying his side did well throughout the tournament. He feels “everyone” knows Bafana Bafana now as a ball-playing nation compared to what they were before.

“It’s a big disappointment for everyone because we feel that we played a very good game not only today but we played a very good AFCON,” said Broos in the press conference after the match.

“And I’m very, very proud of it. I’m proud of my players, the disappointment is this but the proudness is that. What they did, what they performed, not only today I think you have to be proud as a coach.

“So, yes it’s a defeat and you see you played a very bad game with Cape Verde and you win with penalties and today you played a very good game against Nigeria and you lose with penalties.

“That’s also football. But again I think we only have to think about the way we played this AFCON. And I know that everyone knows South Africa now as a good [ball] playing team, and that is the most important thing.”
